IN MEMORIAM
We are sorry to report that Gerry Schwartz passed away on
March 17, 2024 at age 69.
A member of the DMHS Class of 1973, Gerry was a successful entrepreneur in the movie industry in Los Angeles who became the DMHSAEA’s most generous benefactor. The endowment he created for us in 2018 and his annual donations since then have been truly transformational, allowing us to greatly increase the size and number of our grant-supported programs for the students of DMHS. Despite his success in life, Gerry was self-effacing and modest and never asked for recognition of any sort for his generosity.
We send our deepest condolences to Gerry’s family and classmates.

NJ Symphony and DMHS Musicians Rehearse Together
The New Jersey Symphony came to the Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium at DMHS on May 2, 2024 to perform two pieces with 60 DMHS student musicians sitting among them, followed by the NJS and DMHS musicians together rehearsing pieces selected by our Music Director, Dr. Gary Hollander. The rehearsal was conducted by the NJS conducting fellow, Jessica Altarriba. The DMHSAEA supported the event with a grant from our DMHS Concert Fund, endowed by an anonymous donor in 2017. That fund has now allowed DMHS students to attend six NJS performances, of which three have been on campus, and one trip into NYC to the Metropolitan Opera.
NJ Symphony Woodwind Quintet Performs at DMHS
A string quartet and a brass quintet have also performed at DMHS over the past two years, and DMHS has provided tickets to NJ Symphony concerts at the BergenPAC and at New Brunswick's State Theater, all courtesy of an endowment called the "DMHS Symphony Concert Fund," which was created by a generous, anonymous donor in 2017. In implementing the endowment's aims, the DMHSAEA works closely with music teacher Dr. Gary Hollander.

Professional chamber music has returned to DMHS! On January 10, 2023 a woodwind quintet from the NJ Symphony gave a one-hour concert of classical works in the band room attended by fifty students taking music electives. Before each of the five pieces, one of the musicians gave an introduction to the music and its composer, demonstrated their instrument and discussed something of their own career path. There was time for Q&A and for informal chats with the musicians.
