New Jersey Symphony and DMHSAEA Team Up

PictureMembers of the NJ Symphony performing as a brass quintet at DMHS on April 25.

Thanks to a generous, anonymous, 2018 donation, the DMHSAEA funds tickets for
students to attend New Jersey Symphony performances.  The original object was the NJS performances at Englewood's BergenPAC.  That took place three times before the Covid shutdown from early 2020 to mid-2021.  Post-Covid, the NJS no longer performs at that venue.

So the DMHSAEA brought the NJS to DMHS!

On April 25, 2022, a brass quintet from the NJS came to the Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium at DMHS to perform selections ranging from Baroque to Ragtime.  Per the donor's stipulation, one of the musicians gave a brief, interactive lesson to introduce each piece.

The same DMHSAEA ticket fund will support a group of 76 DMHS students to attend the NJ Symphony's performance on May 12, 2022 at the State Theater in New Brunswick.  The original Star Wars movie ("Episode 4: A New Hope") will be shown without the musical track, which will be performed live by the full orchestra.  John Williams' score is a modern classic and for many students, this will be their first, and we hope not their last, exposure to a live symphony orchestra.

June BBQ and Fundraiser!

On Saturday, June 25, from 12 noon to 4:00 PM, the DMHSAEA will hold its traditional barbecue and fundraiser. As always, admission and lunch are free, all class years are welcome and a live DJ will entertain.

The event will be held in person in the DMHS cafeteria and adjacent grounds with simultaneous virtual broadcast via Zoom and on the DJ's Website.  We will provide a tent with open sides to keep any rain off those who prefer to remain outdoors as a Covid precaution.  Masks will be required inside the cafeteria and will be optional outside and in the tent.

If you can't attend in person, keep an eye on this space for virtual links.

Thanksgiving Virtual Reunion Proceeds Help Ida student victims

The DMHSAEA's Thanksgiving all-class reunion and fundraiser was held on Saturday, November 20, 2021.  This year, all net proceeds, plus a boost allocated by our Board, went to academic-related purchases for DMHS students affected by the severe flooding in Englewood during Tropical Storm Ida. The total of $2,500 will be administered by Bergen Family Center, headquartered in Englewood, as part of its existing program to replace DMHS students' school supplies lost in the Ida flood.

We learned that the New York Jets will pay to renovate Winton White Stadium's artificial turf field and will replace the football team's uniforms and equipment, most of which was destroyed by the flooding.  The DMHSAEA is pleased to do what it can on the academic side.

Former DMHS Chemistry Teacher Funds Chemistry Program

In 2018 and 2019, the DMHSAEA funded a program allowing students to participate in a state-wide STEM program, Students2Science. In June 2021, Dr. James Signorelli, who taught chemistry at DMHS in the 1960s and 70s and has also worked for many years in the chemical industry, has generously donated $2,000 to allow this activity to continue in the 2021-2022 school year.  The program is led by DMHS chemistry teacher Mr. Jorge Luis Valcarcel.

Our Second Web Address

This Website is now accessible via a new URL: www.dmhsalumni.org.
The existing URL, www.dmhsaea.org, still works but we felt we needed another option that's more intuitive and easier to remember.  (Careful:  Another site, www.dmhsalumni.com, is operated by alumni of Daniel Murphy High School in Los Angeles.)

Our Next Board Meeting

Our Board meetings are held by Zoom.  The next will be Saturday, May 21, 2022.  Our meetings start at 10:00 AM, but the Board reserves the first hour for administrative business and welcomes visitors at 11:00.  For connection information and to confirm the scheduled date, please email DMHSAEA President Larry Golbe at golbe@rutgers.edu.
